about

When three of Norway's most tone-setting jazz musicians team up with American guitarist Jeff Parker, surely the result must be at least somewhat super?!

Superless is an ensemble in splits; with one foot deeply rooted in jazz history, while the other slips around, trying to gain a foothold somewhere between post-rock and Messaien.

The eight tracks show an impressive range: From whimsical jazz-rock gems (Once Upon a Time in Bollywood), via an acoustic Coltrane-esque power ballad (Julesong) - to undisguised Afrobeat, albeit with an unexpected twist towards the end (Theme from Superless). Drive, sensitivity, melodicism, resistance when needed.

The band made their debut at the Nattjazz Festival 2022, in Bergen, Norway. The next day they headed into an old broadcasting studio. Everything is recorded live in the same room, with only select decorative overdubs.

Jeff Parker is best known to many as a longtime member of legendary post-rockers Tortoise. Others know him better as an improviser in groups like the Chicago Underground Trio/Quartet/Orchestra or the Brian Blade Fellowship. In recent years, however, he has distinguished himself with his own band The New Breed, fusing jazz and hip-hop in a way we haven’t heard before. He is a central figure in American jazz, something his consistent presence in Downbeat's annual polls confirms.

Eirik Hegdal is not only one of Europe’s leading woodwind players, but also a magnificent composer and arranger. Through bands like Team Hegdal, Musical Balloon, and not least the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, he has distinguished himself as one of the most important musicians in Norway.

Bass player Ingebrigt Håker Flaten is cut from the same cloth. With unstoppable energy, he has for decades set the standard for how to play the bass. Atomic, The Thing, Exit/Knarr, the genre-explosive The Young Mothers... Ingebrigt is one of our greatest, and has numerous awards to prove it.

The youngest member, Øyvind Skarbø, is the driving force behind a long series of creative groups, many released on the Hubro label. The trio 1982 united free improvisation with the sound of Norwegian folk music; Bly de Blyant (feat Hilmar Jensson and Shahzad Ismaily) released three eclectic albums before it imploded; the quartet Inland Empire (with pianist Kris Davis) delivered top shelf modernist jazz, while the Skarbø Skulekorps (Skarbø School Band) mixes all of the above and more. In uniforms.
